Pumpkins are seen everywhere leading up to halloween. You can't escape them! But I wonder why pumpkins are so popular and a symbol that Halloween is near.

Why are pumpkins used in halloween?- The tradition started in England, Ireland, and Scotland before the 1800s
- Turnips were originally used to scare away evil spirits on halloween - carved faces looked like shrunken heads, a pretty scary sight!
- When people moved to America, they switched to pumpkins
- Pumpkins are a better choice because they are softer, and in abundance during the American autumn

What other plants are used for halloween?- Venus flytrap - I see monstrous flytrap decorations everywhere, with sharp teeth and evil grins
- Apple - apples are used for toffee or candy apples, great sweet treats
- Bat flowers - bat flowers are spooky looking black flowers. They are fun to grow and a great addition to your garden
- Miss Willmott’s Ghost - a ghostly pale plant with sharp, spiny leaves. They germinate in the first year, and flower in the second
- Ivy - you will see ivy being used for simple foliage decorations. I think they are seen as a spooky plant when they've been depicted as slithering over characters and tangling them in films
- Corn - a very American plant. Around halloween there are corn field mazes, and even as sweets (candy corn)!
