Mushroom growing at home is growing in popularity, especially in aspiring homesteaders. Growing mushrooms at home can be fun and easy with growing kits!
Why should i grow mushrooms at home?
- It is easy from grow kits - you might think that it is a difficult job as starting from scratch requires sterile conditions. But from grow kits you can go straight to fruiting!
- It can be cheaper than buying mushrooms from supermarkets - in my bedroom I was able to get two flushes of nameko mushrooms from kit, then two more after burying it in my garden!
- Grow more uncommon mushrooms - there are some gourmet mushrooms that you can buy as kits, but can’t in the supermarket.
What types of mushroom kits are there?
- ‘Logs’ - they are logs of grain (or other substrate) colonised with mycelium, ready for you to start fruiting
- Pins - logs of colonised substrate with pins, which will fully grow into mushrooms in a matter of days
- Colonised grain - colonised grain already has the healthy mycelium growing, so all you need to do is add it to a substrate and let it grow
- Spores - this is starting from the absolute beginning of mushroom growing. With all materials sterile and ready for use!
What are the most popular mushroom kits in the UK?
Namkeo (log), £16.15 | Yellow Oyster (pins), £14.35 | Turkey Tail (log), £25
Reishi (log), £25 | Oyster (log), £19.95 | Black Cap King Oyster (log), £14.50
Shitake (colonised grain) £18.50 | Lion’s Mane (colonised spawn), £15.99 | Wine Cap (colonised grain), £6.99 | Grow Oyster Mushrooms on a book (colonised grain), £8.95
Coral Tooth Fungus (colonised grain), £16.99 | Inject and Forget bag (all you need are spores), £14.99 | Mycobox grow kit (all you need are spores), £19.99
Liquid Culture Syringe, £9.99 | Liquid Culture Syringe, £10.99 | Cordyceps Militaris Liquid Culture, £15.95 | Reishi Mushroom Liquid Culture, £14.95
If you want to take it a step further, you can also start with mushroom spore prints, but I was unable to find any gourmet prints (only medicinal mushroom prints)
The first time i grew mushrooms was using the cardboard tek, then I used a log to grow oyster an nameko mushrooms. Next I think i will try the spiderman/Uncle Bens tek with spore syringes or liquid culture!
Have you tried growing mushrooms before? What technique did you use?
